Kenya – Maasai Mara National Reserve

Max 6

Arrival Day in Nairobi and transfer to Ole Sereni Hotel.

Following your arrival at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, you will be met by a company representative and enjoy a short transfer to your overnight accommodation at the conveniently situated Ole Sereni Hotel. Dinner tonight will present the perfect opportunity to run through the details of your safari itinerary with Nelis.

Morning flight to the Musiara Airstrip via Wilson Airport.

Following a delicious early morning breakfast, we will take a short transfer to Wilson airport from where we will enjoy a scenic flight into the famous Maasai Mara National Reserve. Shortly after touching down on the Musiara airstrip, we will do a short drive to our beautiful camp, IL Moran, which means “Little Warrior”, located on the banks of the Mara River.

From this location, we are in close proximity to some of the best wildlife viewing found anywhere in the Maasai Mara National Reserve. After settling in at our new accommodation and lunch, we will depart on our first long awaited afternoon game drive, exploring the riches that the Maasai Mara has to offer.

IL Moran is located in the heart of the National Reserve and the immediate areas around the camp offer phenomenal wildlife viewing. Besides the comfort and luxuries offered by the lodge itself, it is more so its location that makes this camp such a sort after property.

Maasai Mara National Reserve – Governors IL Moran

Over the next three full days, we will explore as much of the Maasai Mara National Reserve as possible. To maximize our time and make the most of our excursions, we will enjoy packed breakfasts and if necessary, a packed lunch as well! In doing so, it enables us to explore areas otherwise out of reach.

Our mornings here in this wildlife haven will start before sunrise when you are awoken to a fresh pot of coffee and end with a refreshing beverage as the sun sets over the escarpment. With the use of a private safari vehicle, we are able to enjoy complete freedom, moving around to the beat of the African bush.

The Mara is a haven for large predators, but also for a magnitude of other wildlife species. Rarely will you travel even a hundred meters without seeing something of interest. Majority of our time will be spent looking for the big cats, but not forgetting the other mammals and birds who also live their lives on the vast Mara plains. The Mara River is home to some of the largest Nile crocodiles on the African continent. Past records have shown these historic looking reptiles reaching lengths of 20 feet and weighing in the vicinity of 1090 kg. We will also spend time with the large hippo pods that we will encounter as well as numerous other species of animals that visit the water’s edge.

Transfer to Little Governors Camp

As with every morning before this one, we will move out at the break of dawn and while we are on game drive, the camp will transfer our luggage across to our next stop, Little Governors Camp. For the duration of our safari in the Maasai Mara, we will have the option to explore either side of the Mara River.

The camp forms a semi-circle with its tented accommodation overlooking a marsh that is frequented by a large variety of wildlife such as buffalo, lion, hippopotamus, crocodiles and elephants. The landscape on the Triangle side is different in appearance, with hundreds of acacia trees dotting the grasslands between the Mara River and the Oldoinyio or Oloololo Escarpment.

Little Governors Camp – Hot Air Balloon Safari

This morning will be an extra early start to the day. We will make our way to the open area at the back of the camp, from where we will take to the sky in a Hot-Air Balloon. This is a unique opportunity to experience a bird’s eye view of our wild and natural surrounds.

From where we took off at Little Governors Camp, the general wind direction will take us parallel to the escarpment as we look down on the meandering Mara River, teaming with large pods of Hippopotamus and prehistoric looking crocodiles. We will also be treated to a glimpse of what lies within the green forest belt that follows the contours of the Mara River, a sight otherwise not possible. The landings are often a lot of fun, depending on the wind speed.

Hereafter we will enjoy a delicious breakfast prepared on the vast plains, with a beautiful view of the escarpment towering in the west. Following breakfast, we will spend time on the triangle side of the Mara River exploring new areas where we have not yet ventured.

Little Governors Camp

During the next two days, we can choose which side of the Mara River we wish to explore and it is often best to leave the deciding factor to the movement of the wildlife. More often than not, making set plans run in opposite directions to what the animals have in store. This is where the knowledge and ears of the local guides and your tour leader comes into play. Having a good understanding of animal’s behavior will often assist us in making better decisions and avoid us running into the wrong directions. That said, it is often the not knowing what to expect that makes each and every drive so exciting and the Mara is full of surprises!

Departure Day

Our final morning of this memorable safari has arrived. After a final morning activity and breakfast, we will depart for Nairobi via the Little Governors Airstrip. After landing at Wilson Airport in Nairobi, we will be transferred to one of the beautiful restaurants for lunch. Hereafter we will make our way to the Jomo Kenyatta Intl. Airport where sadly this safari will come to an end.

From all at Nelis Wolmarans Photography, we thank you for your participation in this safari and we wish you a safe journey home.
