INTRODUCTION

The Maasai Mara National Reserve is one of Kenya’s biggest draw cards to international tourism and offers a mind-blowing number and diversity of both mammal and avian life. Little introduction is necessary for this world famous wildlife destination in East Africa. Made famous by the annual Wildebeest migration, the BBC Big Cat Diary series that warmed our hearts to the numerous predators who’s lives we got to know so intimately and then of course the countless wildlife images marketed across the globe. An area of breathtaking vastness, soul soothing sunsets and a deafening silence only interrupted by the sounds of its wildlife.

Majority of the camps in the Maasai Mara have been there for many years and the animals have become very accustomed to their presence and often the best game viewing happens from the comfort of your veranda. At night, Hippopotamus brush against your tent as they graze on the taller grass at the base of your canvas accommodation. With cushioned soles of thick skin and muscle, a herd of Elephant move through camp making their presence noticeable by a few breaking branches only. The eerie whooping sounds of the nearby Hyena clan, taunting the king of beasts in an age-old feud and an ever-present rivalry. Together with the almighty roar of the African Lion, these are the sounds that will lull you to sleep at night.

The Samburu National Reserve is located in the center of the country and is home to a number of mammal and bird species that are unique to this Samburu area. These include the very peculiar looking Gerenuk, the Grevy’s Zebra, Somali Ostrich, Vulturine Guineafowl, Beisa Oryx and Golden Breasted Starling to name only a few. It is more arid then the reserves found further south and houses a number of species that are well adapted to these drier conditions.

Maasai Mara National Reserve

The Mara is not just a haven for large predators, but also for hundreds of thousands of other animals. Rarely will you travel even a hundred meters without seeing something of interest. Majority of our time will be spent looking for the big cats, but not forgetting the other mammals and birds who also live their lives on the vast Mara plains.

Maasai Mara National Reserve

This morning will be an extra early start to the day. We will travel a short distance to one of the nearby camps from where we will take to the sky in a Hot-Air Balloon. This is a unique opportunity to experience a bird’s eye view of our wild and natural surrounds. Hereafter we will enjoy a delicious breakfast prepared on the vast planes, with a beautiful view of the escarpment towering in the west.

Maasai Mara National Reserve

This morning marks our last full day in the Maasai Mara and we will follow the contours of the Mara River, home to some of the largest Nile crocodiles on the African continent.

Morning flight to Samburu from the Musiara Airstrip.

Following a final morning activity and breakfast, we will transfer back to the Musiara Airstrip from where we will fly to the outskirts of the Samburu National Reserve via Wilson Airport. We will touch down on the Kalama Airstrip from where we will enjoy a 40 minute game drive to our luxury accommodation for the next 4 nights.

Over the next three full days we will partake in a number of different activities as we explore the riches of this 200,000 acre wildlife haven. The Kalama conservancy forms part of the greater Samburu land and is home to large elephant herds, a very well established predator population, Lion, Leopard, Cheetah and of course spotted Hyena.
Departure Day.

Sadly, our final morning of this memorable safari has arrived. After a final morning activity and breakfast, we will depart for Nairobi via the Kalama Airstrip. After landing at Wilson Airport in Nairobi, we will be transferred back to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport from where we will say goodbye and depart to our final destination.
